:: Bachelor of Arts in Music ::

Designed for the student who wants a broad education in music, the Bachelor of Arts degree offers a balanced program of study in a wide range of subjects. In addition to the traditional emphasis on music theory, history and performance, Cal Poly's program includes American music, music of non-Western cultures, and the application of sound design. The program provides a large number of elective courses which allows the student to concentrate in a particular area or combine music with other subjects.

> Admission

Because the Music Department wants to help students make the best decision regarding their college career, in addition to the CSU application process, we have established an additional level of application that is required in order to be considered for admission to the music program. This consists of a Supplementary Application Form and an audition/interview.

Admission to the Music Department is during the Fall Quarter only. If, for some reason, a different quarter would be preferable, then it is best to apply for the Fall and then request a deferral, if necessary. The supplementary application process is as follows:

  1. Once a CSU application has been submitted to Cal Poly (by the November 30 deadline), the Admissions Office will forward the student's name and other pertinent data to our department.

  2. Between December and January, we will send out our Supplementary Application packet, which also includes information on financial aid and scholarships. There is the option of either submitting an audition recording or scheduling a time for an interview/audition (dates will be included with the packet). An in-person audition is highly recommended and preferable to a recorded audition. If a recording is submitted, the student still may be asked to perform a live audition if there are any questions. Acceptance notifications generally go out in mid-March.

  3. To apply for a scholarship, an in-person audition is required.

Apply to Cal Poly from the the Web page of the Cal Poly Admissions Office at http://www.ess.calpoly.edu/_admiss/. For general Cal Poly admissions questions, you should contact the Admissions Office.

Apply as an Internal Transfer to the Music Department. This is an option for students already attending Cal Poly who wish to change majors or add a major. For guidelines, please go to http://cla.calpoly.edu/cla/advising/advisingfaq.html#change
